Project Final: Final Project

Overview

This project tasks students to actively engage their local community (Hendrix College) and educate their peers about the concepts of data privacy and the data economy by creating a short YouTube video that incorporates content and skills from the course. Students will be organized into groups of four for this assignment.

Description

  • Groups will choose one of the following topics to focus their video on (if a group wants to choose a different topic, it must be approved by both instructors)
    • Free apps and information transactions
    • Social media and advertising
    • Data privacy
    • Public policy and regulation
  • The content of the YouTube video should cover the “how”, “why”, “so what?”, and “what’s next?” of the relevant topic.
    • “How” is the data collected by the company or organization?
    • “Why” is this information valuable to the company or organization?
    • “So What” is the consequence or implication of this behavior, especially if the public is not functionally aware it is taking place?
    • “What’s Next” is a series of resources or tasks that the audience can use to extend their understanding or personal engagement.
  • On November 11th, each group must submit a proposal outlining how each of the items above will be covered and each student’s role/responsibility in creating the video. This should also include a storyboard detailing a plan for the timing and visual aesthetics of the video.
  • Upon completing the project, the final task will be to write a reflection essay describing each student’s individual experience in creating the YouTube video and contributions to the final project, along with a peer evaluation of your whole team’s efforts.

Technical Details

  • The videos will be due one week prior to finals. We will look at statistics on viewership activity in the following week.
  • The video should be 7:00-8:00 minutes long (5:00 videos are the absolute minimum).
  • There should be a minimum of 1 data visualization, but students are encouraged to do 2 (with all appropriate labels and citations of data).
  • The video description should include any links used in the video, including data sources.
